The ‘Queen of the Dolomites’, as Cortina is affectionately known, is a historic mountain town located in the Veneto region of Northern Italy. Originally a land of farmers with a distant Roman and Barbarian past, it was the dawn of the railway era and the pioneering mountaineers that first put Cortina on the tourism map. During the First World War intense fighting took place in trenches and tunnels on the mountains of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the scars of which can still be seen today. In peacetime, Cortina hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 heralding a golden age of La Dolce Vita, with film stars and social elites regularly frequenting the stylish hotels, restaurants and bars.
Modern day Cortina is well-known for some of the finest food in Italy, its vivid history and huge array of alpine activities which make it the perfect destination for a summer holiday full of outdoor fun. With miles of hiking trails, via ferrata (protected climbing) and downhill mountain biking to name a few of the activities you can enjoy in this awe-inspiring part of the world.
